In 1962, Zanuck returned to the company as president. In 1965, he produced The Sound of Music, which became a record-breaking hit, followed by other hits such as Planet of the Apes. In 1968, however, the company's overconfidence led to the failure of such hits as Doctor Dolittle (1967) and Star! (1968). In 1970, despite such hits as Patton and M (both 1970), the company recorded a loss of $77 million. In 1971, Zanuck retired, and in the midst of the recession, the company's top executives were purged and replaced. During that time, the company produced television movies and hits such as The French Connection (1971), The Poseidon Adventure (1972), The Towering Inferno (1974), The Omen (1976), Star Wars, Days of Love and Applause, and Julia (both 1977), and The Unmarried Woman (1978). In 1980, actress Sherry Lansing became the first female president in Hollywood history, and she was the first female president of Star Wars. Twentieth Century Fox produced hit films such as The Empire Strikes Back (1980), but while the major companies were under the control of large capital, it had not been absorbed into a conglomerate and had struggled alone as a private company (a company with fewer than 50 shareholders and whose stock was not publicly traded). In April 1981, however, it was sold to American oil tycoon Marvin Davis for about $800 million and merged into United Television, and after Sherry Lansing resigned, Joe Wizan, an independent producer of films such as The Getaway and The Brave (both 1972), was appointed president in January 1983.
