A city located in central Osaka Prefecture, on the left bank of the midstream Yamato River. It was incorporated as a city in 1966. It is an area of ancient tombs, and is home to many historical sites, including the tombs of Emperor Ingyo and Emperor Chuai, and the Furumuroyama Tomb Group (historic site), as well as many old temples, such as Fujii-dera Temple and Domyo-ji Temple. In addition to rice cultivation, fruit trees such as figs, peaches, and grapes are grown. There are small-scale paper container, foil, chemical, metal processing, and plastic processing industries. The area is served by the Kintetsu Minami-Osaka Line, Domyo-ji Line, and the Nishi-Meihan Expressway, and residential development is rapid. Area: 8.89 km2 . Population: 66,165 (2010). 大阪府中部,大和川中流左岸にある市。1966年市制。古墳群地帯で,允恭(いんぎょう)天皇陵,仲哀天皇陵,古室山古墳群(史跡)をはじめ多くの史跡があり,葛井(ふじい)寺,道明寺など古寺も多い。米作のほか,イチジク,モモ,ブドウなど果樹栽培がみられる。小規模な紙器・製箔(はく)・化学・金属加工・プラスチック加工工業がある。近鉄南大阪線・道明寺線,西名阪自動車道が通じ,宅地化が著しい。8.89km2。6万6165人(2010)。
