…In Kanadehon Chushingura, he is portrayed as a man of great generosity, with the wisdom to see into the depths of people's hearts and the strong will of a warrior, even though he does frequent the red-light district. The image of Oishi as a powerful man with an imposing physique was established by the first Sawamura Sojuro, who played the protagonist Ogishi Miyauchi (corresponding to Oishi Yoshio) in Oyasu 47 (first performed in 1747). Later, the first Onoe Kikugoro perfected the image of Yurasuke by incorporating the excellent features of other great actors. …

…The Shioya family was also succeeded and revived by his only son, Takeomaru. Based on these works, many rōshi dramas were created afterwards, but the most important ones are the puppet play “Tadashin no Kogane no Tanzaku” (The Golden Chūshin) by Namiki Sosuke, Ogawa Josuke, and Yasuda Kaerubun, performed at the Toyotakeza in October 1732 (Kyōhō 17), and the kabuki play “Oya kazu 47 hon” (Forty-seven Oyas) performed at the Nakamura Kumetarōza in Kyoto in June (or July) 1747 (Enkyō 4). The former owes much to “Musashibumi” and “Goban Taiheiki” and depicts Oguri’s sword attack and seppuku, the struggles of Ogishi Yuranosuke and others, and the attack. In the latter, Ogishi Miyauchi, played by the first Sawamura Sojuro, was a big hit, and the excellent performance of the scene where Gionchō is drunk drew public acclaim. …
