In Japan, postcards are defined as second-class mail under the Postal Law, and there are three types: regular postcards, reply postcards, and parcel postcards.
[Current system]
Since January 4, 1994, regular postcards have been 50 yen each, round-trip postcards 100 yen, and parcel postcards 50 yen. In addition, special postcards such as summer greeting postcards, election postcards, New Year's postcards with prize money, postcards with advertisements, and commemorative postcards are issued. Privately issued postcards, except for parcel postcards, are subject to the following standards, which are based on official postcards issued by the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications.

日本の郵便はがきは〈郵便法〉上第二種郵便物として規定されており，通常はがき，往復はがきおよび小包はがきの3種類がある。

　1994年1月4日より通常はがきは1枚50円，往復はがきは100円，小包はがきは50円となっている。このほか，暑中見舞はがき，選挙はがき，お年玉つき郵便はがき，広告つきはがき，記念はがき等特殊はがきを発行している。私製はがきも小包はがき以外は，郵政省発行の官製はがきに準じ，次のとおり規格が定められている。
