Nimrud (English spelling)

Located on the east bank of the Tigris River, about 35 km south of Mosul in northern Iraq, this is the remains of the royal palace of the Assyrian capital, built by Ashurnasirpal II from 879 B.C. It is also used as the name of the capital's ruins. The name of the city in the Assyrian period was Kalhu, and in the Book of Genesis it is called Kara, built by Nimrod. In the mid-19th century, British A.H. Layard and others excavated the remains of the royal palace, and exhibited the reliefs and winged lion statues used in the palace decoration at the British Museum, causing a great sensation in Europe.

イラク北部，モースルの南約35kmのティグリス川東岸に位置し，アッシュールナシルパル2世が前879年から建設したアッシリアの首都の王城跡。首都の遺跡名としても使われる。アッシリア時代の都市名はカルフKalhu，《創世記》にはニムロデの建てたカラとある。イギリスのA.H.レヤードらが19世紀半ばに王城の宮殿跡を発掘し，宮殿装飾に用いられた浮彫や人面有翼獅子像などを大英博物館で展示して，ヨーロッパ世界に大センセーションを巻き起こした。
