American journalist. Born in Scotland. Moved to the United States at the age of 10. After graduating from the University of Illinois in 1932, he began his career as a reporter for a local newspaper in Ohio. In 1934, he worked as a sports reporter and London bureau chief for the Associated Press, and from 1939 onwards, he worked as a political reporter for The New York Times. He won the Pulitzer Prize twice, in 1945 and 1957. He served as Washington bureau chief (1953), editor-in-chief (1968) and vice president of editorial affairs (1969), and from 1973 he wrote weekly political columnists for The New York Times, where his critical commentary was highly influential. His books include Utakata no Ki and Shimbun to Politico no Tatakai (Both 1967).
