Reston - James Barrett Reston

American journalist. Born in Scotland. Moved to the United States at the age of 10. After graduating from the University of Illinois in 1932, he began his career as a reporter for a local newspaper in Ohio. In 1934, he worked as a sports reporter and London bureau chief for the Associated Press, and from 1939 onwards, he worked as a political reporter for The New York Times. He won the Pulitzer Prize twice, in 1945 and 1957. He served as Washington bureau chief (1953), editor-in-chief (1968) and vice president of editorial affairs (1969), and from 1973 he wrote weekly political columnists for The New York Times, where his critical commentary was highly influential. His books include Utakata no Ki and Shimbun to Politico no Tatakai (Both 1967).

アメリカのジャーナリスト。スコットランド生まれ。10歳のときアメリカに移住。1932年イリノイ大学卒業後、オハイオ州の地方紙で記者生活をスタート。1934年からAP通信のスポーツ記者、ロンドン支局員を経て、1939年以後『ニューヨーク・タイムズ』紙の政治記者として活躍する。1945年、1957年の二度ピュリッツァー賞を受賞。ワシントン支局長（1953）、主筆（1968）、編集担当副社長（1969）を歴任し、1973年から政治コラムニストとして週1回『ニューヨーク・タイムズ』紙に執筆、その評論は大きな影響力をもった。『うたかたの記』『新聞と政治の対決』（ともに1967）などの著書がある。
