A new literary and artistic movement in Poland from 1890 to 1918. It started in Krakow, which was then part of Austria (Gallicia), and spread to Warsaw and Lvov. Influenced by modernism and decadence in Western Europe at the time, it broke with traditional positivism and realism, but its ideas were diverse. Well-known figures include poets J. Kasprowicz, L. Stach, and K. Tetmayer, playwright S. Wyspiański, and novelist S. Zieromski. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
