Tokachi Plain - Tokachi Heiya

A plain that spreads across the Tokachi River basin in central and southern Hokkaido. It covers an area of ​​approximately 3,600 square kilometers, making it the second largest plain after the Ishikari Plain. It is a basin-like plain surrounded by the Hidaka Mountains, the Ishikari, Shikaribetsu, and Akan volcanic groups, and the Shiranuka and Tokachi hills. It is made up of alluvial land formed by the Tokachi River and its tributaries, and a diluvial plateau covered in volcanic ash. The average temperature in January is -9°C, and frost heave is not uncommon. It is a representative field crop region of Hokkaido, and before World War II it produced beans, millet, and flax, but after the war it produced beans, potatoes, and beets, and dairy farming has expanded significantly. The area managed per farm is 20 hectares, twice the average for the entire prefecture, and mechanized agriculture is the most advanced in the prefecture. Obihiro City, located almost in the center of the plain, is the region's core city.

北海道中南部、十勝川流域に展開する平野。面積約3600平方キロメートル。広さでは石狩(いしかり)平野に次ぐ。周囲を日高山脈、石狩・然別(しかりべつ)・阿寒(あかん)の火山群および白糠(しらぬか)・十勝の両丘陵に囲まれた盆地状の平野で、十勝川とその支流の形成した沖積地部分、および火山灰に覆われた洪積台地からなる。1月の平均気温は零下9℃にもなり、凍上現象が珍しくない。北海道を代表する畑作地帯で、第二次世界大戦前は、豆類、雑穀、アマを産したが、戦後は豆類、ジャガイモ、ビート（テンサイ）を産し、酪農が大幅に伸びた。農家一戸当りの経営面積は20ヘクタールと全道平均の2倍で、道内ではもっとも機械化農業が進んでいる。平野のほぼ中心に位置する帯広(おびひろ)市がこの地域の中核都市である。
