Nagano Shuzen

Japanese: 長野主膳 - ながのしゅぜん
Nagano Shuzen

A samurai of Hikone Domain and a scholar of Japanese classics in the late Edo period. His first name was Shume, his given name was Yoshitoki, and his pen name was Momonoya. He was paid 250 koku. He is said to have been born in Ise, but his origins are unknown. He lectured on Japanese classics and traveled around the country with his wife Taki, and in 1841 (Tenpo 12) he opened the Koshokan in Shigaya Village, Sakata County, Omi Province (Shigaya, Maibara City, Shiga Prefecture). The following year, upon hearing of his fame, Ii Naosuke, who lived in Umoreginoya at the time, became his disciple, and when he became the lord of Hikone Domain in 1850 (Kaei 3), he was employed in April 1852 as a scholar of Japanese classics at the Kodokan with a stipend of 20 people. Not only was he skilled in Japanese classics and waka poetry, but when Naosuke became the chief advisor, he played a key role as his trusted adviser and was involved in the Ansei Purge. He was executed by beheading on August 27th in the political upheaval of 62 (Bunkyu 2). He is the author of many books, including "Kogaku Domonroku," "Sawanoneseri," and "Momonosha Kashu."
