Japanese: ハキリバチ(葉切蜂) - ハキリバチ

A general term for insects in the superfamily Anthomorpha, family Megachilidae. Body length 5-30 mm. Mother bees knead pollen and nectar brought back from flowers to make balls, store them in a chamber, and lay eggs on them. Hatched larvae feed on the stored pollen balls and grow. Nests are often made in bamboo tubes, tree cavities, or small gaps in natural objects, but some species also dig tunnels underground. Many species make cup-shaped chambers by stacking pieces of grass clippings or leaves.

膜翅目ハナバチ上科ハキリバチ科Megachilidaeの昆虫の総称。体長5～30mm。母バチは花からもち帰った花粉と花みつをこね合わせてだんごをつくり，房室に蓄え，その上に産卵する。孵化（ふか）した幼虫は，貯蔵された花粉だんごを食べて成長する。巣は竹筒や，樹木の空洞，ちょっとした自然物の隙間などを利用して設けられることが多いが，ときには，土中に坑道を掘って巣をつくる種類もいる。　多くの種は，切りとってきた草や木の葉片を重ね合わせてコップ状の房室をつくる。
