Agnathids - Agnathids

A general term for fishes belonging to the phylum Chordata, subphylum Vertebrata, or subphylum Craniata, and class Agnathostomata. Formerly known as Cyclostomata (or Cyclostomi). Includes all fishes without jaws, and is distinguished from the superclass Gnathostomata, which includes all other fishes with jaws. Some researchers consider the addition of five superclasses, extinct Conodontoids, Pterygomorpha, Lactomorpha, Dentomorpha, and Cephalochorax (also called Osteomorpha), to the classes Lamprey and Hagfish, making a total of seven superclasses. DNA analysis has shown that lampreys and hagfishes are closely related and monophyletic, leading some researchers to reinstate the previously used term cyclostomes for them.

脊索(せきさく)動物門Chordata、脊椎(せきつい)動物亜門Vertebrataあるいは頭蓋(とうがい)亜門Craniata、無顎上綱に属する魚類の総称。以前は円口類(えんこうるい)Cyclostomata（またはCyclostomi）といわれていた。あごをもたないすべての魚類が含まれ、そのほかのあごをもつすべての魚類を含む顎口(がっこう)上綱Gnathostomataと区別する。研究者によって、ヤツメウナギ上綱とヌタウナギ上綱に絶滅種のコノドント上綱、翼甲(よくこう)上綱、欠甲上綱、歯鱗(しりん)上綱、頭甲上綱（骨甲(こっこう)上綱ともいう）の5上綱を加えて7上綱とする見解もある。DNA（デオキシリボ核酸）分析の結果、ヤツメウナギ類とヌタウナギ類は非常に近縁で単系統群であることが示されたことから、これらに対して以前使われていた円口類を復活させる研究者もいる。
