Japan Trench

Japanese:
Japan Trench
A trench east of Honshu. In the north, it borders the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench off Cape Erimo, and the Erimo Seamount is located on the trench axis at this junction. In the south, it borders the Izu-Ogasawara Trench off the southeast coast of the Boso Peninsula. This border is near where the deep area that leads to Sagami Bay branches off. The total length is about 800 km. There are two to three submarine terraces on the continental slope. From 2,400 to 3,400 m deep, the trench slope is steep with many steps. On the ocean side, from 5,600 to 6,000 m deep, a long, narrow depression parallel to the trench forms the trench slope. The trench floor is V-shaped, and there are few places where a flat bottom is developed. The trench depth is deeper in the south, reaching over 9,000 m where it borders the Izu-Ogasawara Trench. However, because this area is topographically connected to the Izu-Ogasawara Trench, the deepest point of the Japan Trench is 8,058 m off the coast of Kashima-Nada, to the north. In the past, the three trenches of the Kuril-Kamchatka, Japan, and Izu-Ogasawara were collectively called the Japan Trench, but due to the correspondence between trenches and island arcs, it was divided into three, and this was also recognized in the international unification of place names in 1962.
