Scattered Positions - San'i

Japanese:
Scattered Positions - San'i

One of the titles given to government officials under the ryo system. It can also be read as "sanni." It refers to those who have only a rank but do not hold an official position, as opposed to the Shikiji, who have current duties among civil and military officials. They are also called sankan or sanji (female officials). Sanni belong to the San'i-ryo, which is under the jurisdiction of the Shikibusho. Therefore, their list is kept by this ryo, but later, only the military sanni were transferred to the Hyobusho. Among the sanni, those of fifth rank or higher are chojokan, who attend this ryo every day, while those of sixth rank or lower are banjo, who attend on shifts 15 days a month, and the provincial ge sanni serve at the kokufu. In terms of treatment, those of fifth rank or higher are given rank land and rank stipends, but those of sixth rank or lower do not, and are not given seasonal stipends either.
