The myth of the descent of the grandson of heaven

Japanese: 天孫降臨神話 - てんそんこうりんしんわ

This myth tells the story of how the Son of the Sun descended from heaven to rule the earthly world, and is central to the Kojiki and Nihon shoki myths. The gods met in Takamagahara in the heavenly world and decided to have the son of the sun goddess Amaterasu Ookami descend from heaven to Ashihara no Nakatsukuni in the earthly world. However, on earth, violent gods led by Okuninushi were rampant. After sending messengers three times to negotiate, Okuninushi and his two sons swore to hand over the country to them. The above myth of the handover of the country forms the prologue to the myth of the descent of the heavenly grandson.

〈日の御子〉が地上界の支配者として天降（あまくだ）る由来を物語り，記紀神話の中心をなす。天界の高天原（たかまがはら）で諸神が協議し，日神天照大神（あまてらすおおかみ）の子を地上界葦原中国（あしはらのなかつくに）に天降すことになる。ところが地上には，大国主（おおくにぬし）神を頭目とする荒ぶる神々が跳梁していた。使者を3度派遣し交渉した結果，オオクニヌシは子の2神とともに国譲りを誓う。以上の国譲り神話が天孫降臨神話のプロローグをなす。
