A small bay in northwestern Venezuela, at the northern tip of South America. It is also called Maracaibo Bay. It is separated from the Caribbean Sea by the Guajira Peninsula to the west and the Paraguana Peninsula to the east, and is connected to Lake Maracaibo by a shallow channel to the south. The bay area has a tropical semi-arid climate with an average annual temperature of around 28°C and an annual precipitation of less than 800 mm, and is covered with low shrub forests mixed with cacti. Venezuela's largest oil refineries are located in Amuay and Cardon on the east coast. [Matsumoto Eiji] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
