Avant-garde photography

Japanese: 前衛写真 - ぜんえいしゃしん（英語表記）avant-garde photography

An innovative trend in photographic expression that emerged under the influence of the European avant-garde art movement at the end of World War I. Technically, several experimental methods were attempted, including photograms, photomontage, and solarization. However, ideologically, it was based on promoting awareness of the mechanical realism unique to photography, and is summarized in the photographic ideal of mechanical art aesthetics, as represented by Moholy-Nagy's Painting, Photography, Cinema (1925). In Japan, it was also called "new photography," and was popular as a modernist trend in the early 1930s, but gradually receded before the outbreak of World War II.

第1次世界大戦末期のヨーロッパ前衛美術運動の影響下から生れた写真表現上の革新的な傾向。技法的にもフォトグラム，フォトモンタージュ，ソラリゼーションをはじめ，いくつかの実験的手法が試みられた。しかし思想的には写真独自の機械的リアリズムに対する認識を促すところに根拠がおかれ，モホイ＝ナジの『絵画，写真，映画』 (1925) に代表される機械芸術的美学の写真理念に集約される。日本では「新興写真」とも称され，1930年代前半にモダニズム的傾向として流行したが，第2次世界大戦開戦前に次第に後退した。
