Baldassare Longhena

Italian architect. Born in Venice, he studied under Vincenzo Scamozzi and eventually became a leading figure in Baroque architecture in the area. His most famous design is the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute, whose construction began in 1631 and was dedicated in 1687. The building has a floor plan combining an octagon and a rectangle, and is topped by two domes, one large and one small, showcasing a splendor befitting the landscape of the port city of Venice. Other famous designs include the Cathedral of Chioggia (construction began in 1633) and Palazzo Pesaro in Venice (1676-1710).

イタリアの建築家。ベネチアに生まれ、ビンチェンツォ・スカモッツィに師事し、やがて同地のバロック建築を主導する存在となった。もっとも著名な設計は、1631年に起工、1687年に献堂されたサンタ・マリア・デッラ・サルーテ聖堂である。八角形と長方形の結合した平面プランの建築の上に、大小二つの丸屋根が架せられ、港湾都市ベネチアの景観にふさわしい華麗さを示している。そのほか有名なものにキオッジア大聖堂（1633起工）、ベネチアのパラッツォ・ペーザロ（1676～1710）などがある。
