Long-run system

Japanese: ロングラン･システム（英語表記）long‐run system

A theatrical term referring to a long-running performance system. This type of performance system, which began on Broadway in the United States, involves performing a single work continuously for as long as it is possible to draw an audience. If a work is a hit, it often continues for several seasons. This type of performance system is in contrast to the repertory system, in which a theater company takes the lead and performs several plays in alternating seasons. Originally, this method was adopted by musical producers, who could not expect success without huge expenses for stage equipment and costumes and expensive advertising, in order to recoup their investments. Therefore, it is inconceivable that a long-running system could be established without the so-called producer system, in which the performance is organized by a single producer or a production company that is a group of producers.

演劇用語。長期興行制度のことをいう。アメリカのブロードウェーで始められた興行方式で，一つの作品を観客動員が可能なかぎり連続して上演する。ヒットした場合には何シーズンにもわたる長期公演となることもしばしばである。このような興行方式は，劇団組織が主体となって，各シーズンに数種の演目を交互に上演するレパートリー･システムとは対照的である。もともと舞台装置や舞台衣裳に膨大な経費を要し，また高額な宣伝費をかけなければ成功を期待できないミュージカルの制作者が，投資額の回収のために採用した方式であり，したがって，興行を1人のプロデューサー，あるいはその共同体であるプロダクションが主催するいわゆるプロデューサー･システムと切り離しては，ロングラン･システムの成立は考えられない。
