Aurelius Prudentius Clemens
The greatest Christian Latin poet since 348-405. Born in Caesar Augusta (now Zaragoza) in Spain, he studied rhetoric and legal oratory before entering the civil service and attaining a high rank. He later retired to devote himself to poetry, publishing a collection of poems in 405. The works included are the Kathemerinon (Daily Song), a composition of 12 lyric hymns; the didactic poem Apotheosis (The Divinity of Christ), which deals with the Trinity and the nature of Christ; the didactic poem Hamartigenia (The Origin of Original Sin); the allegorical didactic poem Psychomachia (The Battle of the Soul), which depicts the struggle between vice and virtue for the human soul; two books of the Refutation of Symmachus; and the Peristephanon (Martyrdom Poem), written in lyric poetry. Finally, the Dithchaeon is a collection of 48 quatrains based on scenes from the Old and New Testaments, 24 of which are themes.
