This metropolitan park straddles the cities of Mitaka and Musashino in Tokyo. The park is divided into the Gotenyama district and the Inokashira district. The Inokashira district is a large natural park centered around Inokashira Pond, the largest spring-fed pond on the Musashino Plateau. Inokashira Pond (also known as Nanai Pond) has springs from seven places, including the spring called Ochanomizu under the plateau, which was called Gotenyama after Tokugawa Iemitsu established a palace there for hunting. The pond also contains the Inokashira Benzaiten Shrine and an aquatic life garden. The pond is the source of the former Kanda Waterworks, and the area around the pond became imperial property after the Meiji Restoration, but was donated to the city of Tokyo in 1913 (Taisho 2). The total area is 286,000 square meters. Inokashira Park Zoo, located in Gotenyama, opened in 1942 (Showa 17). Its purpose is to promote knowledge of natural sciences, including animals and plants, and covers an area of approximately 100,000 square meters. It is close to Kichijoji Station on the JR Chuo Line and Keio Inokashira Line, making it easily accessible. There are many high-rise apartment buildings around the park. [Kiyoshi Sawada] This metropolitan park was bestowed to the city of Tokyo in 1913 (Taisho 2) and opened in 1917. Inokashira Pond (pictured), which was once the source of the Kanda Waterworks, forms the center of the park. The park also includes the Inokashira Park Nature and Culture Center and sports facilities, making it a place of relaxation for the citizens of Tokyo.
