An old town in Gujo County, occupying the Hida highlands upstream of the Nagara River in central Gifu Prefecture. Commonly known as Gujo Hachiman. The main settlement developed as the castle town of Gujo Domain from 1559 onwards, and was a key transportation hub connecting Hida and Mino. The Nagaragawa Railway runs through the town. Lumber, livestock farming, rice cultivation, etc. are carried out here. The town retains the atmosphere of a castle town, and the Gujo Dance Bon Festival is famous. In March 2004, it merged with Yamato Town, Shiratori Town, Takasu Village, Minami Village, Myoho Village, and Wara Village in Gujo County to form Gujo City. 242.31 km2 . 岐阜県中部,長良川上流の飛騨高地を占める郡上(ぐじょう)郡の旧町。〈郡上八幡〉と通称。主集落は1559年以降郡上藩の城下町として発達,飛騨,美濃を結ぶ交通要地であった。長良川鉄道が通じる。製材,畜産,米作などを行う。城下町の面影を残し,盆踊の郡上踊は有名。2004年3月郡上郡大和町,白鳥町,高鷲村,美並村,明宝村,和良村と合併し,郡上市となる。242.31km2。1万6632人(2003)。
