Masachika Ichikawa

...Shindenmura was developed in December 1626 (Kan'ei 3) by Ichikawa Gorobei Masachika, a descendant of a feudal lord from the Warring States period, who received a development permit from a retainer of Matsudaira Tadanori, the lord of Komoro Domain. It is located in what is now Asashina Village, Kitasaku County, Nagano Prefecture, and is in the so-called Saku Plain. The Chikuma River flows nearby, but since it is on a plateau, it is difficult to draw water from the area, and with some exceptions, the area was left as a wasteland. An irrigation canal about five ri long was dug from the Kamagaku River, which flows across a mountain, to draw water and develop the area. The excavation technology was very advanced, and many stories of the hardships surrounding the construction are told. ...

…戦国土豪の流れをくむ市川五郎兵衛真親が，1626年(寛永3)12月に小諸藩主松平忠憲家臣から開発許可状をもらって開発した新田村。現在の長野県北佐久郡浅科村内に所在し，いわゆる佐久平に位置している。すぐ近くを千曲川が流れているが台地上にあるため引水はむずかしく，一部を除いて荒蕪地のまま放置されていた。ここに山ひとつ隔てて流れる鹿曲川から，全長約5里の用水路を開削して引水し開発したのである。その開削技術はひじょうに高度で，工事にまつわるさまざまな苦労話も伝えられている。…
