Murakami Navy

The Murakami clan's navy (pirates) was active in the Seto Inland Sea from the Northern and Southern Courts period to the Warring States period. The Murakami clan was divided into three families: Iyo Noshima, Iyo Kurushima, and Bingo Innoshima, but there is some doubt as to whether they were the same clan. They belonged to the Kono clan of Iyo, and were responsible for guarding ships sent to Ming China, collecting tolls from ships, and sometimes even acting as wokou. After the Battle of Itsukushima in 1555, they joined the Mori clan, and are known for defeating the Oda navy in the Battle of Ishiyama and providing military supplies to Ishiyama Honganji Temple. After the Battle of Sekigahara, the Kurushima (Kurushima) clan became the lord of Bungo Mori Domain, and the Noshima and Innoshima families served the Mori clan of Hagi Domain as shipmen.

南北朝時代から戦国時代，瀬戸内海で活動した村上氏の水軍（海賊衆）。村上氏は伊予能島(のしま)，同来島(くるしま)，備後因島の３家に分かれるが，同一氏族であったかについて疑義もある。伊予の河野氏に属し，遣明船の警固にあたり，また船舶から通行税を徴収，ときに倭冦ともなった。1555年の厳島の戦を契機に毛利氏に従い，石山合戦では織田水軍を破り，石山本願寺に兵糧を入れたことで知られる。関ヶ原の戦後，来島（久留島）氏は豊後森藩主となり，能島・因島両家は船手組として萩藩毛利氏に仕えた。
