The name of the road stretching about 300 km south from the city of Würzburg in south-central Germany to Füssen near the border with Austria. It means "Romantic Road," but the name does not have ancient origins. It was developed after World War II to attract tourists, as the road is lined with small cities that retain their medieval appearance, including Rothenburg and Nördlingen. Near Füssen is Neuschwanstein Castle, built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
