A type of mat made by weaving straw, rush, reed, or bamboo. Generally, it is called straw mat, but woven mats include twill mats, silk mats, and ke mats. Depending on the shape, they are also distinguished as narrow mats, long mats, small mats, and wide mats. Straw mats were used to cover the wooden floors and dirt floors of farmhouses, or hung over entrances to protect against the wind and rain. They are also widely used in agricultural work, such as drying grains, and as a packaging material for luggage. A kamasu (bag) is a mat folded in half with both ends sewn shut, and is used to store fertilizer, coal, salt, grains, etc. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
