A village in Satsuma District, Kagoshima Prefecture. It occupies the northeastern tip of Shimokoshikijima, in the southern part of the Koshikijima Islands. Population: 999 (1995). It was established in 1948 when Imuta, a large area of Shimokoshiki Village, was separated. The village's name comes from Kashima Shrine, which is located in Imuta. Surrounded by the sea on three sides, the coastline is complex with many capes, and on the west side in particular there is a sea cliff known as the Kashima Cliff, which stretches for about 10 km. Most of the village area is mountainous, and the settlement is located on a small flat area that opens up on the east coast in the northeast. Agriculture is sluggish, so efforts are being made to promote the cultivation of the local specialty, the kanoko lily, and livestock farming.
