Japanese: イワオウギ(岩黄蓍) - イワオウギ（英語表記）Hedysarum vicioides Turcz.

A perennial herb of the legume family (illustration) that grows in sparse grasslands in sunny areas such as rocky areas and gravel fields in high mountains. The external shape of this species resembles that of Astragalus chinensis, a medicinal plant endemic to China, so the roots were used as a substitute for Astragalus chinensis for medicinal purposes such as tonicity and diuresis. The Japanese name means Astragalus chinensis that grows on rocky areas. It grows upright at a height of 20-80 cm. The leaves are pinnately compound with 11-25 leaflets. The leaflets are narrowly ovate, 1-3 cm long and 4-10 mm wide. The flowering season is June to August. Numerous butterfly-shaped flowers gather in axillary spikes.

高山の岩場，礫地（れきち）など向陽地のまばらな草原に生えるマメ科の多年草（イラスト）。本種の外形が中国特産の薬用植物であるゲンゲ属のオウギ(黄蓍)に似ているため，その代用として根を強壮，利尿などのために薬用とした。和名は岩場に生えるオウギの意味である。高さ20～80cmで直立する。葉は羽状複葉で，11～25枚の小葉をつける。小葉は狭卵形で長さ1～3cm，幅4～10mm。花期は6～8月。腋生（えきせい）の穂状花序に多数の蝶形花が集まる。
