A type of Greek vase. It means "double-handled" and has two vertical handles that run from the rim or neck to the base. It was used to transport and store wine, olive oil, and water. There are two types of amphorae: the necked amphorae, which have a high, large neck, and the belly-shaped amphorae, which have a bulging base. They originally had lids, but most of them have been lost. A special type is the Panathenaic amphorae, which were given to winners of the votive games at the Panathenaic festival.
