Phased project planning. A method often seen in American product development systems, this is a development system that incorporates rigorous analysis and checks for each step (phase) of product development, and aims to coordinate and integrate the whole. Many large American companies adopted a typical PPP system in which each phase of development was clearly independent from the idea of minimizing risk, and the next phase was not moved on until each requirement was completely met. However, this system had the disadvantage of slowing down the speed of development, and now that speed has become more important, systems that loosen the partitions between each phase and allow phases to overlap are attracting attention.

段階的プロジェクト・プランニング。アメリカの製品開発システムによく見られる手法で，製品開発の各ステップ (フェイズ) ごとに厳密な分析とチェックを組み込んで，全体の調整と統合を図るという開発システムのことである。アメリカの多くの大企業は，リスク最小化の考えから開発の各フェイズを明確に独立させ，それぞれの要件が完全に満たされなければ次のフェイズに移行しないという典型的な PPPを採用していた。しかしこのシステムでは開発のスピードが遅くなるという欠点があり，スピードが重視されるようになってきた現在では，各フェイズの間の仕切りをよりルーズにしてフェイズ同士を重複させるシステムが注目されるようになっている。
