First generation

(1809-56) Nicknamed Kiyoyoshi. He entered the school of the first San'yutei Ensho and took the name Enta. He left Edo for a time, but after returning he took the name Kokontei Shinsho, and later changed his name to Mashou and Shinsho. He performed stories of human interest such as "Otomi Yosaburo," "Kozaru Shichinosuke," and "Kyushu Fukimodoshi."

2nd Generation

(1832-89) His real name was Fukuhara Tsunezo. He was the first disciple of the founder. He took the stage under the name Juroku, Imasuke, and then the name of the second founder. Due to his large size, he was called "Sumo Shinsho."

3rd generation

(1863-1918) His real name was Iwamatsu Wada. He went from Mukashiyamamatsu to Kaminarimon Sukeroku, and in 1911 (Meiji 44) he became Shinsho. He was popular under the nickname "Shamo."

4th generation

(1877-1926) His real name was Tsurumoto Katsutaro. He was the second Imasukemon and was known as Imasuke. He became the third Shinshomon, and after having worked as Mukashiya Imamatsu, Kaminarimon Kosukeroku, Kokontei Shinma, and Kingentei Basho, he became the fourth. He delighted his fans with Edomae storytelling, such as "Sanken Nagaya" and "Akubi Shinan."

5th generation

(1890-1973) His real name was Minobe Kozo. He became Chota after becoming a disciple of San'yutei Koencho II. He changed his name to Engiku, Umataro, Takefu, Bakin, and Shinba, and as a lecturer he became Koganei Rofu, and after changing his name several times he returned to rakugo, becoming the 7th Umasho and assuming the name Shinsho in 1939 (Showa 14). He had a wide range of plays, including "Kaen Taiko", "Onaooshi", "Sanmai Kisho", and "Tounasuya Seidan", and with his unique and unconventional style of performance, he was one of the leading figures of Showa rakugo, in contrast to Katsura Bunraku VIII. Many recordings remain, and his life of poverty and love of alcohol in his youth and prime is well-described in his autobiographies such as "Namekuji Kantai" and "Binbo Jiman". His eldest son was the 10th generation Kaneharatei Basho (1928-82), and his second son was Kokontei Shincho (1938-2001).

初代

(1809―56)俗称清吉。初代三遊亭円生(えんしょう)門に入って円太。一時、江戸を離れたが、帰ってから古今亭新生と名のり、真生、志ん生と改名。『お富与三郎』『小猿(こざる)七之助』『九州吹戻(ふきもど)し』など人情咄(ばなし)を口演。

2代

(1832―89)本名福原常蔵。初代の門人。寿六(じゅろく)から今輔(いますけ)を経て2代目を襲名。巨体のため「お相撲(すもう)志ん生」といわれた。

3代

(1863―1918)本名和田岩松。昔家今松(むかしやいままつ)から雷門(かみなりもん)助六となり、1911年(明治44)志ん生となる。「しゃも」のあだ名で人気があった。

4代

(1877―1926)本名鶴本(つるもと)勝太郎。2代目今輔門で今の助。3代志ん生門となり、昔家今松、雷門小助六、古今亭志ん馬、金原亭馬生(きんげんていばしょう)を経て4代目を継ぐ。『三軒長屋』『あくび指南』など江戸前の話芸でファンを喜ばせた。

5代

(1890―1973)本名美濃部(みのべ)孝蔵。2代目三遊亭小円朝に入門して朝太。円菊、馬太郎、武生、馬きん、志ん馬と改名し、講釈師で小金井蘆風(ろふう)、落語に戻ってまた幾度も改名し、7代馬生を経て1939年(昭和14)志ん生を襲名。『火焔(かえん)太鼓』『お直(なお)し』『三枚起請(きしょう)』『唐茄子屋(とうなすや)政談』など演目も豊富で、独自の天衣無縫ともいうべき芸風により、8代目桂文楽とは対照的な昭和落語の一方の雄であった。残された録音も多く、青壮年時代の貧乏暮らしと酒を愛した生涯は『なめくじ艦隊』『びんぼう自慢』などの自伝に詳しい。長男が10代目金原亭馬生(1928―82)、次男が古今亭志ん朝(しんちょう)(1938―2001)。
