〘名〙① 短くて、刃が厚く幅の広い刃物。薪などを割るのに用いる。※書紀(720)天智六年閏一一月(北野本訓)「斧廿六釤(ナタ)六十四刀子(かたな)六十二枚を以て椽磨等に賜ふ」② 相撲の手の一つ。相手のさし手を上手できめ、その腕で自分のもう一方の手をつかみ、ひじを曲げて相手の胸でおさえる形。ひじを曲げた格好がなた形をするところからこの名がある。
