〘Noun〙① A short blade with a thick, wide blade. Used for splitting firewood. ※Shoki (720) Tenchi 6th Year Intercalary November ( Kitano Honin) "26 axes, 64 machetes, and 62 knives were given to the masters of the sashimi. " ② A sumo technique. A move in which the opponent's thrust is skillfully blocked, and with that arm the other hand is grabbed, bending the elbow and pressing it against the opponent's chest. The name comes from the fact that the bent elbow resembles a machete.

〘名〙① 短くて、刃が厚く幅の広い刃物。薪などを割るのに用いる。※書紀（720）天智六年閏一一月（北野本訓）「斧廿六釤(ナタ)六十四刀子(かたな)六十二枚を以て椽磨等に賜ふ」② 相撲の手の一つ。相手のさし手を上手できめ、その腕で自分のもう一方の手をつかみ、ひじを曲げて相手の胸でおさえる形。ひじを曲げた格好がなた形をするところからこの名がある。
