A Greek island located in the southeastern Aegean Sea, about 20 km off the southwestern tip of Turkey. One third of the island is arable land, where wheat, tobacco, cotton, grapes, olives, etc. are cultivated. An international tourist destination. Colonized by the Dorians around the 10th century BC, the town of Rhodes was founded in 408 BC and prospered as a trading base. From the Middle Ages onwards, it was the home of the Knights of St. John from 1309 to 1522, and was part of Turkey until 1912, and then Italy until 1943. In 1947 it became part of Greece. The main city is Rhodes. The old town, which retains medieval Gothic architecture, was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1988. 1,398 km2 .
