...Although there was no specific word for it at the time, it can be said that Griffith had already discovered montage. However, montage was not theorized until the 1920s in France and the Soviet Union. For example, French critic Léon Moussinac (1890-1964) considered film to be a "rhythm seen by the eyes" and developed a theory of montage that stated that constructing a film means giving it rhythm. Abel Gance's film The White Rose of the Railroad (1923) is considered to be a representative experimental work.
