1827‐1905 A French Jewish banker. The eldest son of James, the founder of the Paris Rothschild Company. He served as director of the Bank of France (1855) and as an executive of many companies related to the Rothschild Company, including the Northern Railway. In 1868 he succeeded his father as head of the Paris Rothschild Company, and worked in the family finance business with his two brothers, Gustave and Edmond, until 1905. Alphonse was active at the end of the 19th century, during the development of joint stock banks, and the scope of activity for private banks such as the Rothschild Company was rapidly shrinking.
