They call themselves Kurukh. They are an indigenous people who live in the Chotanagpur Plateau in India. They are Bedids, with dark brown skin, long heads, and wavy hair. Their language is Oraon, a Dravidian language (speaking population: about 1.9 million). They are divided into numerous clans with totems of animals, plants, minerals, etc., and each village has a chief and a hereditary priest. The most important element of social organization is the house of unmarried men, where traditional matters of social life are taught. Today, many of them are Christians.
