The abbreviation for the United Nations Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East. A subordinate body of the Economic and Social Council. Like the Economic Commission for Europe, it was established in 1947. Following the independence and accession of Pacific island countries, it was renamed ESCAP at the 30th Colombo General Assembly in September 1974.
