The last dynasty of Vietnam, with its capital in Hue from 1802 to 1945 (see figure). Also written as Nguyen Dynasty. Since the 17th century, Vietnam had been divided between the Nguyen (Quang Nam Dynasty) in the central and southern part of Vietnam and the Le and Trinh (Tranh) clans in the north, but the Tay Son Nguyen dynasty rose to power and overthrew the Nguyen in 1777 and the Le and Trinh regimes in 1786, unifying the country (Tay Son Revolution). Nguyen Phuc Anh, a member of the southern Nguyen clan, expanded his territory by fighting against the Tay Son Nguyen with the aid of Siam and France from 1778 onwards, and finally occupied the north in 1802, successfully regaining control of the whole country.
