Weistum

Weistum
In medieval Germany, a judicial assembly was held in which a juror (judiciary) familiar with customary law answered questions, or a document that recorded such a judgment. In the narrow sense, it refers to the law relating to rural manors, and began to be recorded after the 13th century. Jacob Grimm (→Brothers Grimm) collected and compiled this huge collection of village laws into seven volumes. It is used as an important historical source for understanding the rights of peasants in German villages in the late Middle Ages.
