Hojo Kasutei

A Confucian scholar and Chinese poet of the late Edo period. His given name was Jo, his pen name was Kojo, his pen name was Kasutei, and his nickname was Joshiro. He was born to a doctor's family in Matoya, Shima (Mie Prefecture). He went to Kyoto to study Confucianism under Minagawa Kien, and then studied at Kameda Hosai's school in Edo. In 1808 (Bunka 5), ​​he was appointed head of the Hayashizaki Library in the Inner Shrine of Ise Jingu, but he soon resigned and retired to Saga, Kyoto. He was later invited by Kan Sazan to become head of Renjuku in Kannabe, Bingo (Okayama Prefecture). He was also appointed as a Confucian scholar in the Fukuyama Domain, but died of an illness while staying in Edo as a government official. His grave remains at Shinshoji Temple in Sugamo, Tokyo. His poetry collections include "Saga Shoka" (1812) and "Bizan Sankan" (1820).

江戸後期の儒者、漢詩人。名を譲(じょう)、字(あざな)を子譲、号を霞亭、通称を譲四郎という。志摩(三重県)的矢(まとや)の医者の家に生まれる。京都に出て儒学を皆川淇園(みながわきえん)に学び、ついで江戸の亀田鵬斎(かめだほうさい)の塾で学んだ。1808年(文化5)伊勢(いせ)神宮内宮の林崎(はやしざき)文庫の長に迎えられたが、ほどなく辞して京都の嵯峨(さが)に隠棲(いんせい)した。その後、菅茶山(かんさざん)に招かれ、備後(びんご)(岡山県)神辺(かんなべ)の廉塾(れんじゅく)の塾頭になった。また福山藩の儒者に取り立てられたが、江戸詰御用として江戸滞在中に病没した。東京・巣鴨(すがも)の真性寺に墓が現存する。『嵯峨樵歌(さがしょうか)』(1812)や『薇山三観(びざんさんかん)』(1820)などの詩集がある。
