A type of load cell, it is a transducer that detects the magnitude of an externally applied force (load) by converting it into a proportional voltage or pressure. There are electric resistance wire strain gauge types, hydraulic types, pneumatic types, etc., but the strain gauge type is generally the most widely used. This type of load cell has a sensing part that elastically deforms when a load is applied, and an electric resistance wire strain gauge is attached to it to form a bridge, which converts the load into a voltage proportional to the load. It has good accuracy, linearity, and responsiveness, is small, and can be easily measured and recorded remotely. Therefore, it is used not only for testing but also as a management instrument.

荷重計の一種で，外部から加えられる力 (荷重) を，これに比例した電圧や圧力に変換して，力の大きさを検出するトランスデューサのこと。電気抵抗線ひずみゲージ式，油圧式，空気圧式などがあるが，一般にひずみゲージ式のものが広く用いられている。この形式のロードセルは，荷重を受けると弾性変形する受感部に，電気抵抗線ひずみゲージを接着してブリッジを構成させ，荷重に比例した電圧に変換するようになっている。精度，直線性，応答性がよく，小型で遠隔測定や記録が容易にできる特徴をもつ。したがって，試験用のみでなく，管理計器としても活用されている。
