…He became a military doctor, but soon retired and worked as a civil servant in Orenburg and other border provinces. He also traveled widely and energetically collected Russian dialects, folklore such as old tales and proverbs, and woodblock prints and other folk materials. At the same time, under the pen name Kazak Lugansky, he published old tales, travelogues to remote areas, and fiction with a strong realistic color. He published the Russian Proverbs (1861-62), which contained more than 30,000 proverbs and idiomatic expressions, and the Explanatory Dictionary of the Great Russian Language in Modern Use (1863-68), which contained about 200,000 words, and was made an honorary member of the Academy of Sciences. …
