A general term for a long sword with a circular metal ornament on the pommel. In ancient times, it was called Komatsurugi. It does not use foot hardware or a tsuba, and as a rule, the scabbard and handle are of the Miguchi style. Its origins lie in China and Korea, but those from the Kofun period are known to have the following types, based on the ring body and its internal decoration: plain ring, three-leaf ring, three-layered ring, dragon and phoenix ring, and lion-biting ring, and differences in style depending on the period have also been recognized. Due to the existence of a single dragon ring sword from the tomb of King Muryeong of Baekje, the prevailing theory is that it was a ceremonial sword distributed by the Yamato court to influential people in various regions as a symbol of official rank.
