British politician. Prime Minister during the American War of Independence. He studied at Cambridge University, entered the royal court, and served under George II and George III. In 1765, he was appointed Prime Minister after Grenville, and repealed the Stamp Act. The following year, he resigned due to dislike by George III and disunity within the cabinet. Thereafter, as the leader of the Rockingham Whigs, he supported the theorist Burke and the eloquent CJ Fox, and harshly criticized the government's stance that had led to the American War of Independence. When he was appointed Prime Minister again in 1782, he immediately began peace negotiations with America, but died of illness before the Treaty of Paris was signed. → Related article Duke of Newcastle Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
