True name - Mana

Manabon refers to the kanji itself, as opposed to kana (Man'yōgana, hiragana, katakana) which are borrowed sounds and readings of kanji. "Ma" means genuine and "na" means character, and it is also called manna or honji. As opposed to kana books written in kana or a mixture of kana and kana, manabon refers to books with the same content written only in kanji, in other words, in classical Chinese style. Famous examples include "Manabon Ise Monogatari" and "Manabon Heike Monogatari". It can also refer to regular script kanji, as opposed to cursive and semi-cursive.

漢字の音・訓を仮借(かしゃ)した仮名（万葉仮名、平仮名、片仮名）に対して、漢字そのものをいう。「ま」は真正、「な」は文字の意で、まんな、本字ともいう。仮名または仮名交じり文で書かれた仮名本に対して、同一内容を漢字だけで書いたもの、つまり漢文体のものを真名本とよび、『真名本伊勢(いせ)物語』『真名本平家物語』などが有名である。また、草書、行書に対する、漢字の楷書(かいしょ)を意味することもある。
