A major department store chain. Founded in 1931 by Aoi Chuji as Maruni Shokai in Nakano, Tokyo, and adopted its current name in 1935. Business grew with the establishment of stores near train stations, the introduction of 10-month payments, and credit cards. The company has built a high-profit structure centered on loan interest. Its customers are young. Unprofitable stores were restructured in the long recession following the collapse of the bubble economy. The consumer finance division has also expanded. Headquartered in Tokyo, with 24 stores (as of March 2011). Capital in 2011 was 35.9 billion yen, and sales for the fiscal year ending March 2011 were 406.4 billion yen. Sales breakdown (%) is as follows: retail 80%, cards 12, and retail-related services 9.
