A chair with front and back legs connected by two rockers that allows the chair to rock back and forth. It is believed to have been invented by B. Franklin in the United States in the 1760s and 1770s. Rockers were used in medieval cradles, but their application to chair legs had not been attempted until then. There are two types of rocking chairs: the Windsor chair type and the ladder-back chair type. The former type was made in Boston, USA around 1800. It has a floral pattern on the top rail made using a stencil, a curved seat, and a low seat, making it stable and comfortable to sit in. It was called the "Boston rocker" and was widely used in America. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
