Former name of the province. Hishu. The northern part of present-day Gifu Prefecture. [Ancient times] A lower province belonging to the Tosando route (Engishiki). Until the beginning of the 8th century, it was written as Hita or Fida, but following the Daizui (great auspicious) sacred horse tribute in April 702 (Taiho 2), the use of the characters Hida was officially established around 708 (Wado 1). Kofun (ancient burial mounds) began with circular tumuli in the mid-5th century, and keyhole-shaped tumuli in the Kinai region began to appear in the early 6th century. The legend of Sukuna's conquest, described in the article for the 65th year of Emperor Nintoku in the Nihon Shoki, which is said to have had two sides to it, is probably a legend based on the image of a local force resisting the infiltration of central forces.
