...Next, the hook was improved to have sawtooth-like notches on a thick board, and the number of notches allowed the hook to be raised or lowered freely. This type of board hook was called Gandakagi, and was widely seen in the Tohoku region, where it was also used by the Ainu. In contrast to these, the Jizokagi was made by attaching a hanging rope to a crosspiece called a "kozaru" (little monkey), allowing the height of the hook to be freely adjusted.
