American law schools. In American universities, no legal education is offered at the undergraduate level. Law schools accept undergraduates who have majored in something other than law (social sciences, humanities, or natural sciences are acceptable) for four years at the undergraduate level, and then offer three years of legal education. However, some law schools admit students who have completed three years of undergraduate study if they are particularly outstanding students or in other exceptional cases. The reason for this system is that it is desirable to study subjects that are not directly related to practical use before studying the "practical" subject of law, and this is based on the idea that this will enable the training of lawyers who are equipped to legally handle new problems that arise as society changes.
