Japanese: 食用ガエル(食用蛙) - しょくようがえる

The common name for edible frogs. Frogs are eaten all over the world, including the bullfrog Rana catesbeiana (illustration), native to the United States, also known as the potato frog. For example, the English name of the European tree frog Rana esculenta means edible frog, and the tiger frog Rana tigrina , native to South Asia, is called water frog (tui-koi) because of the taste of its thigh meat. In the Amazon River basin, tadpoles of the upside-down frog Pseudis paradoxa , which can reach a total length of 25 cm, are sold in markets.

食用にされるカエルの一般名。ショクヨウガエルの別名をもつアメリカ合衆国原産のウシガエルRana catesbeiana（イラスト）をはじめ，カエルは世界各地で食用に供されている。例えば，ヨーロッパトノサマガエルRana esculentaの英名edible frogは食用ガエルを意味し，南アジア産トラフガエルRana tigrinaはもも肉の味から水鶏（ツイコイ）と呼ばれる。アマゾン川流域ではアベコベガエルPseudis paradoxaの全長25cmに達するオタマジャクシまでが，市場で売られている。
